Since 1980 the Literacy Council of Manatee County has been helping adults improve their English skills through one-on-one volunteer tutoring. We help native English speakers as well as people encountering English for the first time.
We are a non-profit organization that believes in giving the gift of literacy at no cost to our students. Our most precious commodity is our people and we are always looking for new members to serve in whatever capacity they are comfortable with.
You can help promote literacy in many different ways. You can serve as a tutor helping a student, as a volunteer, or by giving a donation that will be used to improve our service to the community. Please help us make a difference in someone's life.
Last year the Literacy Council of Manatee held it's first Adult Spelling Bee (click on the picture to the left to see photos from the event). The event was a huge hit in the community. This years event will be held on May 17th at the new Meals on Wheels Renaissance building on 9th street in Bradenton from from 11a.m.-2p.m. Adult teams of four will compete to see who will receive the champion title. Each participant receives a tee shirt with their team name, a catered lunch and is eligible to win great prizes. A Company banner for each team is displayed and each team does a short skit or promotion for their business. All the funds from this event go to continue the Literacy Councils programs. The Literacy Council teaches adult literacy one student at a time. we currently serve 157 Manatee County citizens, whose desire is to learn to read and write in the English language.
